Titanfall 2 - Colony Reborn
The Colony Reborn DLC for Titanfall 2 is unfortunately pretty slim, but it does almost manage to scratch an itch in every important aspect of online gameplay. First of all, what's in it? As the name implies, Colony is an old map from the first Titanfall that has been remastered and reworked into the Titanfall 2 online mode. There's also a new weapon though it's just a re-skin of the first assault rifle that every player has access to - also from the first entry of the series. The only other gameplay addition is a new pilot execution. Finally there are a lot of new purchasable cosmetic items including new prime titans (a variant of the stock titan with a unique look and execution), calling cards, and camouflages.
Colony Reborn is packaged with a pretty large online balance patch. Some of the stuff I got to test out for myself while other things are so specific or don't tailor well to my play-style that I probably won't try them. One thing in particular I'm thankful for are the Scorch boosts present in the patch. Flame shield lasts notably longer and is much more versatile now, and my abilities are no longer doused by electric smoke. I actually thought that was kind of a cool feature, but the way it's worded in the patch notes makes it seem like something that wasn't intentional to begin with (the full notes are below, by the way).
I won't hamper too long on the patch, but I will say just a few more things about it. I like that now in Attrition, all pilots can see all minions on the map at all times. It moves Attrition mode along much quicker in my limited experience with it at this point (you'll likely remember the feature from Titanfall if you played the original) now that I can start of a match by killing grunts like it was my full-time job. I also like that the location of the batteries have been switched around in Last Titan Standing because it was a bit one-sided based on where you started in the match, giving a certain team an advantage every time.
Now for the Colony map itself. Simply put, it's a breath of fresh air to have another map to play on at this point, and getting it for free is just the best. Colony features every good quality of a map in Titanfall 2, like the wide open lane outside of the community fence (perfect for a couple of titans to "settle things outside"), the huge town in the middle where you can dash door-to-door or weave through the alleyways, and the narrow outer lane that provides ample opportunity to get to the other side quickly or to flank your opponent. Snipers shouldn't be worried either. While Colony is a very welcome flatter map, there are still many high places to pick apart the opposition.
- The new gun is effectively the R-201 Carbine
- Colony is a fantastic map and a welcome addition
- Tons of premium micro-transaction cosmetics
- The Curb-Check execution is stylish and brutal
- It's free, you likely already have it
Titanfall 2 - Colony Reborn gets a 7 out of 10.
